I really enjoy all of your music recommendations and thought it would be great for us to start posting some mixes for the forum instead of just writing down what we are into lately.... kind of like our own little All The Wine forum web radio!

Becker turned me on to Grooveshark, which is FREE! It allows you to create playlists using their music catalog, and if you can't find your song you can apparently upload it (though so far I get an error whenever I try to do this). I signed up and am in the process of making a couple of lists we can test to see if this works for us all (even those who choose not to register but want to listen). While I'm still learning the ropes, I figured I'd start this thread and invite all to post lists and/or advice on how to use Grooveshark.

Who says the mix tape is dead?

Here are a couple of playlists to kick things off. Just click the "Listen to Playlist" button. Since the point is to explore the favorites of others and introduce people to new music, I avoided The National as well as clear board favorites (TV on the Radio, Wolf Parade and affiliate bands, Frightened Rabbit, Spoon, etc.).

Mix 1 - Post-punk/Indie

Heavy on the older standards to avoid stuff we've talked about here, but with plenty of recent stuff too.

Mix 2 - Alt-country/quirky folk & miscellaneous

If you like swampy blues and Neko Case, and SSDL, and baritone vocals, this is for you. If you have an aversion even to non-Nashville country, stay far far away!

And I'm hoping someone takes the bait and takes a turn since I can't think of better people to play DJ!

I just made an account as well, and will start making some playlists later.

Thanks klsike for putting these together. I listened to both of them and heard a lot of stuff that that I have never heard before (along with a lot of good shit that I have heard). I would have to say that overall I liked the "Mix 2 - Alt-country/quirky folk & miscellaneous" better of the two, but that could just be that it meshed better with the thesis writing I am doing now... I have to say my favorite surprise in there was "Solitary Man" by Crooked Fingers as I am a pretty big Neil Diamond fan and never knew that that cover existed. laugh.gif

After seeing these I don't know that I have enough knowledge of music outside the scope of what is discussed on this forum to make a good mix tape. I might have to get creative with a theme. unsure.gif

Is that because it is mellower music to work to or because your thesis research involves banjos in some way?!

I've never really caught on to Neil Diamond as a singer/performer, but I do think he's vastly underrated as a songwriter. That whole Crooked Fingers EP is made up of unexpected covers. Who knew you could pull off Prince's When U Were Mine on the banjo?

By all means! I know not everyone here shares our taste for Americana or whatever you want to label the indie blues/country/folk spectrum, but I'd sure be interested in your picks from that genre. I know for a fact you can learn me somethin' new there (since you already have!).

(And I'll be looking for mixes to distract me from writing my dissertation, rather than helping me write it! wink.gif )

Becker - if you are already signed up, my user name is the same there - klsike.

Good idea this. I like doing playlists when I get the time!

Here's a quick Funky playlist. Not quite done and not in the right order yet, but I'll keep adding to it.

Really enjoyed this, especially Bobby Womack and Maceo Parker. Saw Maceo play in a little dive of a bar about 10 years ago and that was a really fun show.

Also, Grooveshark 2 is now available to everybody as of today - check it out, it's really colorful and much more user-friendly.
