Anybody listen to their album?

If you haven't heard of them, they are the latest blog-hype machine band. I've found bands like this to be very hit-or-miss, a band like Arctic Monkeys came out and was pretty good after all the hype(although probably still not deserving of all of that hype), and then there's someone like Cold War Kids who I absolutely cannot get into at all.

I like the Vampire Weekend album, their band name is horrible, but that's another story. It is acoustic-based indie-pop with a definite nod towards 60s pop music and also some traditional influences as well. They are not very easy to describe, but on the album I think 7 or 8 out of the 11(or maybe 12) tracks are very enjoyable. There are some really catchy tracks on the album and only a few misses.

I had mentioned it but it was buried in the "What are you listening to?" thread:

Just got Vampire Weekend CD - loved it on first hearing but already it feels a little bit thin. Kind of like Pavement without sounding anything like Pavement.
I've listened to it a couple more times and I'm still not entirely sure what I think. I like that they don't sound like anything else, at least.

I think this may be the reason I have latched on to them so easily since picking up the album a couple of weeks ago. I'm not entirely sold on it being a great album, but there are a lot of quality songs and the sound is much different than anything I've been listening to lately.

I'm in the same boat as both of you, though maybe a bit more on the negative side. I think it's decent, but I can't see myself going back to it in a year and I'm not sure I'll buy their follow up should they make one. It's all right, but I wanted more than two really good tracks (M79 and I Stand Corrected in my opinion). I think that may be down to the hype, but the feeling I was left with was that it didn't live up to my hopes / expectations.

There's a lotta buzz surrounding these guys. It's just not my style of music.

The more I listen to this album, the more I wish they would have ditched the faux Afro-pop style like on "One(Blake's Got A New Face)", "Byrn" and "The Kid's Don't Stand A Chance." They are much better as a more standard indie-rock/pop act, songs like "I Stand Corrected" are "A-Punk" are top shelf stuff.

I loved their CD when I first heard it. And after listening to it about twenty times over the past three months I love it even more. If 2008 produces ten songs that are more enjoyable than M79, it's going to be a good year. I was very pleased to see a truly fun and accessible CD like this one get lots of praise from the hipster douches at Pitchfork. It doesn't happen often.

A lot of people make the argument that they do sound very familiar - namely the Afro-sound period of the 80's of Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Talking Heads, and this is mentioned as praise and as a swipe. The backlash against these guys is huge and really uncalled for. So out of spite, after initially liking them a little bit, I now like them a lot, just to anger people who don't like them.
